Individual and Society –their Mutual Reflexion in Historical process
Indivíduum a spoločnosť – ich vzájomná reflexia v historickom procese
Program: SRDA
Project leader: PhDr. Michálek Slavomír DrSc.
Annotation:The goal of the project is to offer an innovative approach towards the question of individual through an original methodological approach, which is not used often by the Slovak historiography. Topics dealing with an individual in history have during the last decades almost exclusively concentrated on standard biography of one person. The research of rituals, reflexion, individual self-reflexion, conflicts and political culture is absent or only limited. The same can be said about the reconstruction of life contexts, socio-cultural changes and transformation processes. The content of the project represents the reflexion of individual and his/her identity in the society, formation of stereotypes, one’s own (and strange) view of his/her neighbourhood and everyday activities, social surroundings and formation of a network of social relationships. A book has never been published in Slovakia, which would focus on dealing with the place of individual in society from interdisciplinary perspective, for example in cooperation with similar social sciences (sociology, philosophy, ethnology, political science, auxiliary sciences of history, military history, but also historical anthropology or history of architecture). The goal of the project is therefore to enhance the current basic research (political, economic and social history) and to offer new perspectives on history through the eyes of individual protagonists – people in chronological period from 16th to 20th century. The ambition of the project is to bring a new conceptualization of the history of Slovakia and to reflect the works and research groups of neighbouring countries in order to follow the present-day trends in European historiography.

Intellectual Heritage and Scientific Communication 1500-1800 with Slovak Relation as a Part of European Culture and Identity
Intelektuálne dedičstvo a vedecká komunikácia 1500-1800 so slovenskými vzťahmi ako súčasť európskej histórie a identity
Program: SRDA
Project leader: PhDr. Kowalská Eva DrSc.
Annotation:This interdisciplinary project will be conducted in the following academic fields: Historical science and Archeology, Library and Information Science (social aspects). The project outcomes will be focused on innovative approaches in making available the knowledge of scientific communication and intellectual heritage of the modern age to the public as well as to the community of scholars. The research topic of the project revolves around scientific communication and intellectual heritage. The research problem pertains the material documentation of concrete expressions of scientific correspondence and exchange of information and knowledge among our intellectuals who entered into an academic conversation with foreign scholars and intellectuals regarding science, culture, politics, economics, and education. The specific research problem of the project rests in digitalization and attractive presentation of selected documents to the general public. The general goal of the project is derived from our understanding that the present level of information and communication technologies offers means with the help of which it is possible, for the first time in history, to reconstruct the network of scientific, scholarly, and personal relationship among the European intellectuals of the modern era. At the same time, we are now able to widely distribute the results and input of our specific, intellectual written heritage that is found in the European context, while also promoting new forms of scientific collaboration. The project has a solid national as well as European (international) dimension and enables our scholars to participate in the ongoing COST Action: COST IS1310 Reassembling the Republic of Letters, 1500-1800. (A digital framework for multi-lateral collaboration on Europes intellectual history.)

Continuities and discontinuities of political and social elites in Slovakia in 19th and 20th centuries
Kontinuity a diskontinuity politických a spoločenských elít na Slovensku v 19. a 20. storočí
Program: SRDA
Project leader: Doc. Šoltés Peter PhD.
Annotation:The goal of the project is to study political and social elites in Slovakia at the time of regime changes and changes of borders in the 19th and 20th century. It has been the assumption that during these ground-breaking events complete elite changes took place and that Slovak history has been periodically marked with radical social and cultural breakdowns and personal discontinuity. The members of this research team will verify the hypothesis according to which besides discontinuity there was also continuity, especially at the middle and lower level of elite hierarchy. In this context they will study measures, mechanisms and strategies applied by the “old” elites in their confrontation with the “new” aspiring elites in order to protect their positions and statuses in the surroundings of a new political reality or a new regime. Key periods and milestone events which will be studied by individual researchers are: Period of the reforms by Joseph II, pre-revolutionary decades of the Hungarian reform movement and the revolution 1848/49, the neo-absolutist period and the 1860s before Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, the 1870s, the 1st decade of the 20th century, the disintegration of Austria-Hungary and establishment of Czechoslovakia, establishment of autonomous Slovakia and the Slovak State/Republic 1938/1939 – 1945, post-war period with an attempt to restore the regime of the interwar Czechoslovakia and the communist coup d’état 1946/1948, the period of internal crisis and the “change of cadres” in 1950s/1960s, the Prague Spring and the normalization period until 1989. In their research the members of the research team will apply various methods. Among them will be prosopographic analyses, case studies as well as cliometric techniques of acquiring statistical and other serial data and their assessment.
