RARE - Changing Discourses, Changing Practices: The Roma as Human Resource
Changing Discourses, Changing Practices: The Roma as Human Resource
Program: INTERREG
Project leader: Mgr. Kentoš Michal PhD.
Annotation:Roma people are the largest ethnic minority in the European Union (EU) and among the most deprived, facing social exclusion, discrimination and unequal access to employment, education, housing and health. Most of the estimated 5,2 M Roma people living in the Danube Region today still face intolerance, discrimination and exclusion from the labour market. Despite all efforts so far, policy makers and public entities are still lacking in-depth knowledge of the target group, proper institutional capacities and tools for integrating fragmented and inefficient services, an efficient institutional framework to interweave interventions and cooperate with key stakeholders, especially civil society and the private sector. The lack of, or inadequacy of evaluation & monitoring tools has also been a major obstacle in designing & implementing policies explicitly targeting the marginalised Roma. Therefore, RARE aims to enhance the capacities of and cooperation among actors having a stake in the labour market participation of the Roma in order to better exploit their economic potential. RARE will result in equipping partner institutions with new opportunities for synergies and innovation to effectively tackle labour market inclusion of the Roma in the Danube Region and monitor and assess efficiency of interventions. RARE Partners will define the prerequisites of effective institutional cooperation, elaborate and test innovative intervention models for labour market inclusion and will develop convincing economic argumentation for such interventions. The leveraging of know-how acquired in RARE will be facilitated by persuasive and easily digestible presentation of knowledge facilitated through sensitisation activities and transnational and national networks of stakeholders. RARE partnership involves 21 (13 financing and 8 ASP) partners from 8 DR countries. The partner (PP) organisations cover all DR countries where the exclusion of Roma population represents a key problem and high policy priority. RARE approaches Roma labour market integration with a multi-dimensional, multi-stakeholder, strategic partnership to achieve its objective and for greatest possible impact on the Danube Region. RARE partnership includes a mix of countries, competences, roles and types of stakeholders that are complementary at project level, and will allow to jointly develop institutional capacity and test cooperation tools/models in an effective and exemplary way.

YMOBILITY - Youth Mobility: maximizing opportunities for individuals, labour markets and regions in Europe
Mobilita mladých : maximalizácia príležitostí pre jednotlivcov, trhy práce a regióny v Európe
Program: Horizont 2020
Project leader: doc. Ing. Baláž Vladimír PhD., DrSc.
Annotation:Research on international youth mobility has been fragmented, mostly based on relatively small samples and case studies. YMOBILITY develops a comprehensive research programme which addresses the following: • Identifying, and quantifying, the main types of international youth mobility in the EU, and their key characteristics. Particular attention will be given to differences between and within three main types: highly skilled, less skilled and students • Understanding what determines which individuals do and which do not participate in international mobility as personal and professional development strategies: their motives, migration channels and information sources • Analysing the individual outcomes in terms of both employability and careers (skills and competences) and non-economic terms (welfare and identities). • Analysing the territorial outcomes for the regions of both origin and destination, in economic, demographic and cultural terms • Differentiating between short-term and long-term outcomes, taking into account return migration and future intentions to migrate. • Identifying implications for policies in migration but also of education, the economy and housing The research will utilise existing secondary data for the whole of the EU, but will mainly rely on primary quantitative data (large-scale surveys to be undertaken by polling agency) and qualitative data (interviews with migrants and returned migrants). The study will focus on 9 countries representing different contexts for youth mobility: Romania, Slovakia and Latvia as sources of emigration and return; the UK and Sweden as destinations for migrants; Germany, Italy, Ireland and Spain as both major destinations and countries of origin. The policy analysis will be informed by interviews undertaken with key informants, such as migrant associations and policy-makers. Experimental methods will be used to assess how individuals will respond to different scenarios of future economic and social change.

ENLIVEN - ENLIVEN, Encouraging Lifelong Learning for an Inclusive and Vibrant Europe
Podpora celoživotného učenia sa pre inkluzívnu a pulzujúcu Európu
Program: Horizont 2020
Project leader: Ing. Studená Ivana PhD.
Annotation:The ENLIVEN project’s overarching objective is to provide an innovative model and mechanism to support policy debate, policy formation and policy evaluation in lifelong learning, focusing on the needs of today’s young adults, and integrating theoretical and empirical perspectives from social and computer sciences. The project will generate an evidence-based analysis of where, when and why policies have been effective, and develop a computer-based intelligent system to improve policy-making. Specific objectives: - Map and critically assess key elements of programmes implemented at EU, national and regional levels to support access to and participation in adult learning among excluded population groups and those at risk of social exclusion, assess how these have addressed disadvantage, inequality, and social exclusion, and helped overcome barriers to participation. - Assess the impact of “system characteristics” (of initial and adult education, the labour market, the economy, and social protection) on aggregate participation rates (overall, and in various segments of adult education markets), and on the distribution of participation (with special reference to disadvantaged young adults and using gender-sensitive approaches).
 - Assess the role of lifelong learning in developing a productive, efficient and competitive economy through investigating what learning potential and innovation ability exists within workplaces, what organisational models favour innovation ability and innovative oriented training, and how effective learning actions are. - Identify and map the nature and availability of data about adult and lifelong learning, and integrate these with new research findings from across the ENLIVEN project and, using data mining, establish a knowledge base for the development of an Intelligent Decision Support System to support policy making. - Design and implement an Intelligent Decision Support System, and test how this could adapt to new knowledge and learn from restoring users’ experience interactively. - Identify the learning potential and innovative capacity which exists within workplaces, what organisational models favour innovation ability and innovation-oriented training, and how effective learning actions are.

UrbanHist - UrbanHist: History of European Urbanism in the 20th Century
Urbánna história: 20. storočie a európsky urbanizmus
Program: Horizont 2020
Project leader: Prof. PaedDr. Šutaj Štefan DrSc.
Annotation:Throughout the 20th century, urban planning constituted itself as an important tool to spatially direct social developments. This applies to Europe more so than to any other continent. Urban planning contributed significantly to the emergence of the welfare state, strong economies and a relatively balanced settlement structure. However, urban planning also caused the suppression and destruction of some population groups, alongside natural and cultural resources. Most studies on 20th century urban planning adopt a national perspective, while studies aiming to provide an overview focus on several core countries. Furthermore, methodological approaches are very heterogeneous. UrbanHist’s aim is to develop and sustainably promote a joint understanding of the history of urban planning in the 20th century from a European perspective. Complementing contributions of academic and non-academic partners will systematically increase the scientific level of the project. New knowledge, critical debates and dissemination will be strengthened. UrbanHist intends to facilitate the breakthrough of the European planning history debate, which is currently in its initial phase of development. The promotion of foreign doctoral students is part of daily university routine. In regard to the promotion and internationalisation of doctoral students, the four universities have already achieved a high standard.

Dialóg Východu a Západu v 15. storočí z pohľadu performatívnych štúdií. Rekonštrukcia divadelných predstavení na základe dochovaných textových a obrazových prameňov.
Program: VEGA
Project leader: PhDr. Hlaváčová Anna CSc.
Annotation:The Council of Florence (1439), where representatives of Byzantine elites encoutered Latin world, might be discussed: however, the event brought unique impulses to the art history. As a theatrologist, I will draw my attention to the spectacular phenomena designed to overcome linguistic limits of the spectators by transforming the conciliar debate into theatre imagery. Performances formed a cultural dialogue between Byzantines and West and, being based on the iconography common for both sides, they tried to reach agreement by non-verbal means. While the western theatre was an exceptional experience for the Russian participants, one of them (Avram of Susdal) noted the seen, and his text - via manuscript copies - inspired a line of the future theatre development. The quality of the performances echoes in the realm of visual arts, stimulating the reflection about mise-en-scenes, scenic elements, costumes and locations. My aim is to reflect the 15th century sources and reconstruct the Florentine performances.

Institutional framework of Slovakia’s economic development in the new phase of globalisation.
Inštitucionálne rámce ekonomického rozvoja SR v novej etape globalizácie
Program: VEGA
Project leader: Ing. Nemcová Edita PhD.
Annotation:In a globalized World the factor endowments and quality of the institutional framework are of high importance for economic development of countries. Inadequate understanding and underestimation of institutions’ importance may have negative impacts on economic development. A flexible economy, resilient to systemic crises must operate within an optimal mix of institutions. The mix promotes for synergies among the smart, inclusive and sustainable growth types. Specific types of growth are highly dependent on an efficient layout of institutional frameworks. The growth frameworks sometimes are complementary, but sometimes also contradictory. A mechanical transfer of institutional frameworks between the countries can result in a suboptimal setting of the institutional mix. Creation of institutional mix therefore is a delicate task. It depends on (a) ability to measure efficiency of institutional framework for specific types of growth, and (b) mix optimization via a number of quantitative and qualitative methods.

KOGLIM - Cognitive limits of effective information processing and communication
Kognitívne limity efektívneho spracovania a komunikovania informácií
Program: VEGA
Project leader: PaedDr. Kurincová Čavojová Vladimíra PhD.
Annotation:The aim of the project is to identify and describe factors contributing to people’s better acceptance, comprehension and processing of expert information that are necessary for informed and evidence based decision making. The amount and complexity of information is growing steadily, however, people tend to believe more in pseudoscientific theories, biases or they deny science altogether, which has a negative impact on the life of individuals (refusal of vaccination, financing ineffective “treatment” methods, ignoring medical recommendations, believing in conspiracies, etc.). Lack of comprehension and acceptance of expert information are caused by (1) cognitive limitations of the information recipient (e.g., confirmation bias), (2) the way information is phrased and presented (e.g., using percent instead of natural frequencies). By studying these limitations we should be able to design and test the possibilities of efficient communication of information for debiasing and optimization of decisions.

KOGZLY - Cognitive failures - individual predictors and intervention possibilities
Kognitívne zlyhania - individuálne prediktory a možnosti intervencie
Program: APVV
Project leader: PaedDr. Kurincová Čavojová Vladimíra PhD.
Annotation:Project focuses on the question which individual predictors influence cognitive failures of people and how can we help them to make better decisions. Cognitive failures are examined from two perspectives –from the perspective of predictors entering into cognitive process and from the perspective of predictors of cognitive failures in specific areas. Relatively new and original is the area of epistemically unwarranted beliefs (EUB), which represent specific area of cognitive failures and understanding of predictors of EUB can have practical implications for everyday life – from explication of vulnerability in financial decisions to political extremism. The aim of the project is to construct methods for measuring rational thinking and EUB, identify individual predictors of cognitive failures and their mutual interaction. It will enable us to examine how resistance to cognitive failures in rational tasks correlates with various EUB and to identify certain socio-cultural factors that predict forming of EUB in Slovakia. We will also experimentally verify effect of interventions modified according to these individual predictors on cognitive failures. Previous intervention efforts were not successful because of the universality of used procedures without regard to specific characteristics of groups of people, who are – for whatever reasons – immune to these interventions and without regard to specific domains, therefore we aim to specifically address these concerns in this project. Thus, our results can contribute to verification of the latest models of cognitive processes within dual process theories and in connection with EUB as one of the manifestation of cognitive failure in everyday life.

CDSSHE - Computer-Aided Decision Support System for Hepatic Encephalopathy
Počítačový systém podpory rozhodovania pre hepatálnu encefalpatiu
Program: APVV
Project leader: PhDr. Ing. Dobeš Marek PhD.
Annotation:The goal of this project is to provide deep speech and handwriting analysis and investigate whether speech and handwriting can be used for diagnosis and monitoring of hepatic encephalopathy and whether there exists relationship between speech, handwriting and other biomarkers in hepatic encephalopathy. The number of novel signal processing algorithms, which reveal alteration in handwriting and speech more accurately than existing approaches, are proposed, giving rise to new group of features. The robust feature selection algorithms select the optimal subset of these features, which are fed into non-parametric regression and classification algorithms, mapping the signal processing algorithm outputs to stage of hepatic encephalopathy. Even though proposed project is focused on particular disease, we expect that some of the outputs, such as new features will be applicable also for other diseases.

Risk assessment in decision making of individuals on the personal and company/business finances and business opportunities
Posudzovanie rizika v rozhodovaní jednotlivcov o osobných a firemných podnikateľských financiách a podnikateľských príležitostiach
Program: VEGA
Project leader: doc. Ing. Mgr. Hanák Róbert PhD.
Annotation:Individuals make decisions about personal and business finances facing risk and uncertainty. At the same time these decisions, such as retirement scheme choices, investment of life-savings, investment into new ventures and alike are of crucial importance and imply consequences for the future of the concerned individual and that of his/her family members. Many individuals, however, make sub-optimal decisions, leading to considerable personal/family/business financial losses. One of the reasons of such failures is related to differences in individual risk perception and assessment. This project therefore aims to study psychological factors and variables (personality, cognitive and socio-demographic) playing a role in risk assessment throughout the process of financial decision making. The project will produce new theoretical knowledge as well as concrete solutions helping individuals to better understand, support, and handle the process of financial risk assessment.
